Editorial Consulting
Startups, redesigns, and other big content projects are among my favorite editorial challenges. I excel at taking publications from nebulous ideas to concrete finished products.
My clients have included Entrepreneur magazine, The YGS Group, The Wills Company (Haven), Content Mosaic, and many others.
I served as executive editor of the Club Managers Association of America’s quarterly Club Management magazine from 2010-2014, working with The YGS Group and the association to set a vision and contract industry professionals and freelance writers to serve CMAA’s mission. Also through The YGS Group, I was senior editor of Integration Quarterly (IQ). I helped develop a new DBIA association magazine in 2011 and 2012.
As an editorial consultant, I was part of a team that developed a new line of custom travel guides for GeoNova (formerly MapQuest Publishing). These included BargainQuest, a guide to 1,465 flea markets in the U.S.
In December 2004, 75 million racing fans were delighted to discover Mobil Travel Guide: NASCAR Travel Planner, an officially-licensed guide to the 30 cities with NASCAR-sanctioned tracks in the U.S. and Mexico. As the former executive editor of Mobil Travel Guide, I developed the 512-page, full-color book in less than five months.
I was editor of the 2006 edition of Chicago SHOPS, Chicago magazine’s annual bible to the city’s best shopping.
Teaching and Workshops
I have worked as a lecturer and a teacher, helping aspiring writers achieve their goals. My students have ranged from mid-career journalists looking to switch from staff positions to freelance careers, to undergraduate students, to those entering the field from other industries.
I have given how-to presentations to audiences at the American Society of Journalists and Authors, Vanderbilt University, Illinois Woman’s Press Association, Off Campus Writers’ Workshop, Chicago Women in Publishing, and other corporate groups and associations. I have taught in traditional classroom settings including at the Medill School of Journalism and Columbia College of Chicago, and for MediaBistro.com, the Society of Features Journalism, and at The Porch in Nashville.
